A Growth Mindset Helps Close the Gender Gap
In math and science, female students trail behind their male peers. It starts as early as Kindergarten and proliferates through elementary school, according to a study published by AERA Open, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Educational Research Association.
Transitioning to middle school is a big adjustment for many students. Couple that with an insecurity about abilities in math and science, and many girls will resign themselves to be poor students in these subject areas.
A Stanford University field study shows that exposing middle-school students to a Growth Mindset approach is a proven way to close the gender gap. Taking a Growth Mindset approach, girls who are taught to think of intelligence as a skill to be honed, rather than an innate ability, learn they can achieve academic success in math and science classes.
With a growth mindset, people believe they can learn and grow through dedication, hard work, and perseverance, building on their talents and intellect. By showing middle school girls that people become smarter through effort, and that setbacks in middle school are normal but temporary, they can learn to overcome their fear of failure.
At Halstrom Academy, our faculty and staff are committed to exposing our students to the growth mindset concept. Rather than leaving them stuck feeling “I can’t do it,” especially when it comes to math and science, students are taught to believe “I may not be able to do it now, but I can learn…” Plus at Halstrom, we personalize education by teaching classes 1:1. In one to one instruction, students receive a tailored education and are able to learn in their style and at their own pace. There is no hiding in the classroom, and students quickly discover a joy in learning and feel pride in their accomplishments.
To help students develop a Growth Mindset, Halstrom Academy is introducing its students to this philosophy through its new course “Mindshift.” Through this course, students will discover how to learn and grow through dedication and hard work, build on their talents and intellect, and to learn that perseverance, rather than giving up, reaps rewards.
