Growth mindset: Introducing Mindshift

Growth mindset: Introducing Mindshift

Have you ever thought of trying something new but then changed your mind because you were afraid that you would not be good at it? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. There are not many people who are able to overcome that kind of fear. So, what can you do to go from saying “I can’t do this” to saying “I’m going to give it a try and if I fail, then I fail”?

It all begins with seeing the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. The way that Carol Dweck defines fixed mindset in her book “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” is “believing that your qualities are carved in stone”. Growth mindset, on the other hand, is “the belief that your basic qualities are things that you can cultivate through your efforts”. She believes that once you begin your path to a growth mindset, you also begin your path to love for learning.

With that comes the confidence in trying unknown things. The journey is not a quick one, but it is extremely rewarding in the end. Mark Twain has said “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you did not do than by the ones you did. So… sail away from the safe harbor. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Having a growth mindset can be challenging but it also allows you to see your full potential. In the article “Is it okay to think you are awesome?” you can find more about the benefits of having a growth mindset. People who have a growth mindset are more likely to maximize their potential. They tend to learn from criticism rather than ignoring it; to overcome challenges rather than avoiding them; and to find inspiration in the success of others rather than feeling threatened.

At Halstrom Academy, we are excited to introduce a new course, Mindshift. This course teaches students how learning occurs and how they can improve their ability to learn. This content is based on the seminal research of Carol Dweck and Angela Duckworth and on their proven techniques for teaching these concepts to k-12 students. We believe this course will transform how students think about learning and about their capacity to grow.

Our mission at Halstrom is to make the learning experience for every student personalized, engaging and enjoyable. For more information on our Mindshift course and schedule, contact us today.
